Introduction to the Product Release Process

The release of an HR system or product through Information Systems (IS) is a process that typically includes 10 major phases:

  • Phase 1: Concept
  • Phase 2: Opportunity
  • Phase 3: Requirements
  • Phase 4: Design
  • Phase 5: Development
  • Phase 6: Testing
  • Phase 7: Deployment
  • Phase 8: Review
  • Phase 9: Support
  • Phase 10: Decommissioning
Multiple groups from IS and HR are involved in a product release. HR groups include the appropriate user group as well as HR Products and Services, which serves as a liaison between the user and IS. Within IS, the HR Corporate Services Solutions (CSS) team services the HR systems. The CSS groups include Infrastructure and Database Evolution (IDE), Product Design and Development, and Operations Quality within various HR program areas.

To help standardize and improve the product release effort, a representative IS team has researched existing methods, interviewed staff to identify challenges, and defined a set of common processes for each phase. The processes have gone through multiple reviews before arriving at this PReP Model.

This web site and the associated downloadable documents provide phase-by-phase flowcharts showing the sequence of tasks and the relationships among them. In the text, you will find an overview of each phase and short descriptions of the tasks or groups of tasks included.
